We're into the year 2025 with an introduction to a new OKX Wallet App - which is now available on the App Store and Google Play. We've long debated whether to keep our DeFi wallet as part of our primary OKX App. Ultimately, we decided to separate the apps and put them out in the world to see if standalone apps become more popular.
Background on the OKX Wallet experiment
We first introduced OKX Wallet three years ago and made this service available as a mode within our app, allowing people to switch from a centralized exchange to a self-custody mode with access to dApps.
In the early days, it was an experiment. Since then, we've witnessed a huge demand for our wallet and DeFi-gateway services. Today millions of people use our wallet to self-custody their crypto. We see roughly 500,000 new wallets created daily while processing a billion USD in daily transactions. People use our wallet to access all kinds of crypto and digital assets across more than 130 blockchains. In total, about 44.5bn USD equivalent in crypto is self-custodied via OKX Wallet.
With this incredibly fast growth, we want to improve the discovery and customer experience even more. We found that people new to crypto are still unfamiliar with OKX Wallet. Partly because it is embedded in our primary app and often hard to discover. To improve this discovery, and the overall familiarity with self-custody wallets, we decided to separate it into a new app.
How will the two apps be different
Anyone new to OKX can download one of the two apps - OKX app or the OKX Wallet app* - from the app stores depending on location**.
OKX App is built to make it easy for first or second time investors to buy, sell, trade or pay with crypto. It's your daily crypto-finance app. In this app, you can:
Track the markets, discover trending crypto
Build your investment portfolio
Earn rewards for holding long term positions (select markets only)
Switch to advanced mode when you want to trade the markets
Use trading bots to use signal trading or copy trading (select markets only)
Trade futures (select markets only)
The new OKX Wallet app is a crypto wallet app managed by you. You can use this wallet as a key to then access a range of decentralized crypto markets with NFTs, memecoins and new trending digital assets. In this app, you can:
Self-custody with your own keys
Swap millions of new tokens with other people in real time
Create, collect or trade digital art, including NFTs and inscriptions
Discover onchain rewards, and thousands of other DeFi dApps
Use our matching engine that crawls all the popular DEXs to execute the best prices***
What existing wallet holders need to know
For anyone already using the OKX Wallet in our main app, we encourage you to (1) download the new OKX Wallet App, and (2) once downloaded, use your seed phrase to import your wallet into the new App.
During a transition period, wallet(s) will remain accessible in both the OKX app and the new OKX Wallet app. However, wallet features in the OKX app will be phased out over time, so it's important that existing individuals import their wallets to the OKX Wallet app as soon as possible.
Existing wallet balances will not be affected, as OKX Wallet holders already custody their own crypto. If you choose not to download the OKX Wallet app, please ensure that you keep your seed phrase in a secure place so that you can access your wallet in the future.
About OKX Wallet custody and security
Given that OKX Wallet is a fully self-custody wallet, we do not hold or have access to any of the crypto stored on the wallets. People who use this wallet are issued a seed phrase which can be used to recover your crypto on any compatible crypto wallet. Therefore, your crypto is never stuck on OKX Wallet at any time. As long as you have your wallet password, or your seed phrase, you have access to your crypto at all times.
Our wallet software is battle tested. We've never been hacked and are ranked amongst the most secure self-custody wallets. All our technology and software is built natively and built in-house and audited regularly by bounty hunters who we incentivize to test our security walls.
We hope this update will ultimately create more ease of use and access for people who use our services on a daily basis to access crypto markets or use their crypto for gaming, DeFi or real world assets.
